DC may be the older comic imprint, but there’s no doubt that Marvel Comics is the acknowledged leader in the multi-million dollar comic book industry and this league-leading position is most evident whenever Marvel announces any new ‘comic events’ that usually happen a couple of times every year. These are the multi-title crossovers where heroes from different titles interact in stories that are specifically written to interweave among a number of titles. One of the pipe dreams for any comicbook fan is to see heroes and villains from different ‘universes’ interacting. For the longest time, this kind of scenario was deemed impossible. That would be like seeing Manchester United and Liverpool combining their players to form a new team – it’s just not done. But over the last two decades we’ve actually seen these crossovers happen. They say that the true measure of a hero’s greatness is defined by the severity of the evil he has to overcome. This saying says a lot about the hero and equally so about the enemy he has to face. A hero’s worth is somewhat diminished if he doesn’t have to face adversity and adversity in the form of an evil archenemy is the stuff of epics and legends.
The same can be said in comic books. Reality shows are getting a bad rap from many people. The most common criticism about reality television is that it’s like the broadcast equivalent of junk food – all empty calories. The criticism being leveled at reality TV does have a kernel of truth to it.
