Eat, drink and be merry, right? Sure, but as most of us know, it’s hard to stay merry when we wake up with a raging hangover the next day. Luckily, a few simple precautions can help cushion the effects of last night’s party.
Don’t skip dinner
The food in your stomach will help dilute the alcohol, so you’re not reeling from the full impact of all those vodka martinis. High-fat dishes are particularly effective in slowing down effects of alcohol, since these coat the stomach lining so it absorbs less of the toxins.
Drink lots of water
Try to take a glass of water for every glass of alcohol. It prevents dehydration (one of the reasons you feel so godawful in the morning) and also slows down your drinking–so you pace yourself, and are better able to monitor whether you’ve had enough.
Choose a drink
The more different kinds of drinks you have, the more likely you’re going to get a hangover. So as they say, ‘Choose your poison.’ Stick to one kind of liquor for that night!
Know your body
It differs for everyone: some people will get drunk faster on vodka than tequila, others can go on several rounds of beer and not feel a thing. Observe your reactions to different kinds of alcohol. So if you know you have a big day at work tomorrow, avoid the ones that have you feeling awful the next day.
